The Mermaid Inn, Rye. East Sussex.

This beautiful hotel was formerly an inn frequented by smugglers. The cellars beneath the building are said to date back 1156. The rest of the hotel was rebuilt in 1420. With a wealth of character from its huge inglenook fireplace, sloping floors and old beams to its secret passages, it's not surprisingly reported to be haunted! It has been said that a woman in a greyish gown sits in a chair by a fireplace in one of the rooms and often guests who have left their clothes on the chair overnight find their clothes to be soaking wet in the morning! Another ghostly apparition is of a man who walks through the wall of the bathroom, across the bedroom then justs fades away. A lot of poltergeist activity has been reported in other parts of the hotel at different times. Probably the most famous ghostly tale from this haunted hotel is of two dueling Cavaliar soldiers in one of the bedrooms. They fight across the bedroom and the victor throws the wounded victim down a secret passage then disappears. These are just a few of the paranormal occurrences at this old Inn. The Mermaid has even been investigated by the Most Haunted team a few years ago and i believe they have asked to go back to do further investigations.
